It had been a few years since I last read a book in the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Series, and I wondered whether the charm would still be there for me. I shouldn’t have worried. THE HOUSE OF UNEXPECTED SISTERS was the perfect antidote to all the stress of the past 12 months during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Author Alexander McCall Smith’s gentle, descriptive and meandering writing style certainly complements the beauty of the setting (Botswana, Africa), where the pace is slower, and characters often muse and philosophize on life. These are people I’ve grown to like and root for. As in earlier books, the plot's emphasis is on relationships and not action, and in HOUSE, a surprising twist may have long-term personal consequences for Precious Ramotswe. I look forward to catching up with this beloved series.
