A very odd period drama set in 17th century Holland during the tulip economic bubble and buying frenzy. The story revolves around a rich trader's young wife and her affair with a poor painter hired to make the couple's portrait. The story is sometimes an overheated romantic potboiler, weirdly goofy comedy and economic history lesson. There is absolutely zero plausiblilty to events in the second half of the movie but it is never boring and oddly compelling. Surprisingly much better than all the bad reviews would have you believe. Very good production detail brings the lively venue of the free trading capital of the world at the time alive. Nice to see Christoph Waltz in a sympathic and comedic role for a change.
