This movie is absolutely chilling. I would agree with the other commenters about the actions of the school in this scenario, except in the special features the director is quite clear that though he used an amalgam of stories to create this vision, that it is based on real life occurrences where a child's story got taken quite out of hand. A young child has her little heart broken and mixes up what has happened in her life when talking to the school director. This leads to a poorly done investigation and seriously dangerous accusations against Jacob, a teacher at the school. Over time, you see quite a few friends and the entire town turn against him as more and more children also assert the same. The kicker comes with the scene where the cops go looking for the non-existent basement. Once again, Mads does a fantastic job and though he pulled most of my empathy, neither did I lose sympathy for those who were on the other side of the coin and simply upset that their children may have been violated. However, I was yelling at the screen more than a few times (call the POLICE!). So glad they changed the ending on this film, otherwise I'd have bawled for days. It was really well done. Watch the special features it if is available on your disk, it is really worth it.
