This book felt.... meaningless and empty. I couldn't bring myself to care about the plot or the characters. The whole setup for this whole game thing was empty and contrived. Marco and Celia had this weird insta-love that I could not care less about. Their characters are completely flat and undergo literally no development for the whole 30 odd years the book covers. I didn't even enjoy the "magic" or whatever it was at all! There was little to no world building thought behind the "magic" and its system, and it just annoyed me. I also have no idea how Marco's magic works or how he even learned to use it based on his lessons with the stupid grey dude. So much of this book is description, description, description. In many books, I do not mind this, but the Night Circus and its plethora of lengthy, slow descriptions did absolutely nothing for me. I was never drawn to it, it never seemed magical or mystical to me. Some parts were cool, sure. The concept is cool, sure. But half of this book was an unnecessary description that just made me want to skim. The timeline was confusing, and I'm sure I could have paid more attention and done just fine but I just didn't care enough to bother. Poppet and Widget were kind of annoying but not too bad. They were like manic pixie dream... twins? Bailey was the decentest character in the book, I guess. This meh review sums up my meh feelings for this meh book. Anyways. 2 freaking stars or whatever.
