Too many times, you read a book and then see the movie. I saw this version first (Jim Caviezel as Edmond Dantes) and then saw the 1934 version starring Robert Donat. This version (Caviezel) disappoints me because the plot is twisted and deviated from the book. The ending is very different from the book. On the other hand, Donat's version seems to resemble the book in the beginning, but then again the ending is different from the book. But having said that, if you like happy endings, both versions would seem to give you that. I would recommend that you see both versions to see what I mean. The only drawback on the Donat version is it is done in black & white, which does not give justice to the jewels, to say the least.
