The real charm of this movie is the charm of Beatrix Potter's drawings, which are wonderfully reproduced as being of "living" characters by restrained animation (it's not Song of the South), and backed up by a great period feel, especially in the countryside where certain shots might make you believe that Peter Cottontail could be hopping along any minute. And it works as well for adults as for kids, because it is a very adult story.
