Jewish baked goods have brought families together around the table for centuries. In Modern Jewish Baker, Sarna pays homage to those traditions while reinvigorating them with modern flavors and new ideas. One kosher dough at a time, she offers the basics for challah, babka, bagels, hamantaschen, rugelach, pita, and matzah. Never one to shy away from innovation, Sarna sends her readers off on a bake-your-own adventure with twists on these classics.

Too many variations on restricted themes: challah, babka, hamantaschen, and rugelach---while leaving out many other Jewish classics and breads. The photos are nicely done, and the writing is clear. If you are a dedicated aficionado of the above-stated items, by all means try this book out. If not, you can still get joy in looking at its photos.

This baking book is pretty superficially Jewish, and superficially baker-oriented. The recipes are all written by volume and not by weight, even though the author suggests having a scale in order to weigh out equal challah strands (?!). There are some creative ideas here, but overall I'd skip this and pick up Stanley Ginsberg's "Inside the Jewish Bakery" or Maggie Glezer's "A Blessing of Bread" if you are looking to bake some bread with a Jewish root.
