"Lucy is faced with a life-altering choice. But before she can make her decision, she must start her story--their story--at the very beginning. Lucy and Gabe meet as seniors at Columbia University on a day that changes both of their lives forever. Together, they decide they want their lives to mean something, to matter. When they meet again a year later, it seems fated--perhaps they'll find life's meaning in each other. But then Gabe becomes a photojournalist assigned to the Middle East and Lucy pursues a career in New York. What follows is a thirteen-year journey of dreams, desires, jealousies, betrayals, and, ultimately, of love ... Their journey will take Lucy and Gabe continents apart, but never out of each other's hearts. Was it fate that brought them together? Is it choice that has kept them away?"--Jacket.

Read this in one afternoon. The writing is spectacular and really pulls you in. Definitely frustrating with the choices Lucy makes but it was a well thought out and written story. Worth the read!

Reese Witherspoon's February 2018 book club selection. I so wanted to love this book because Reese loved it, but alas I do not get the hype around it.... Yes there’s romance but I just found myself frustrated with the dilemmas and decisions of Lucy.

I wanted this book to be so much better than it was. I could not root for any of the main characters, they were all incredibly self-absorbed, especially Lucy. I just wanted her to snap out of it- being so focused on a relationship with a man from her past that she randomly met during 9/11 and told her how great the view was from his apartment WHILE NYC WAS BURNING all while she has this sweet husband that would whisk her off to Paris for the weekend. (The audacity!) Also, the whole book is written in a tense that is filled with such doom, you know it's not going to end well. I slogged through and still don't understand why I finished it. I guess I'm a sucker for a New York love story. This, however, is not that.

I loved the writing in this book, but I found it hard to have empathy for the characters. The story was interesting enough, though a little predictable. The author draws you in with her writing, and I liked the format of the book, but I got so annoyed with the choices the characters were making that It was hard to actually like the story by the end of it. A good read, but it's not a book I'm going to be adding to my personal collection.

I was really hoping to love this book, but it fell kind of flat for me. I got really frustrated with the way Lucy never seemed willing to even try to get over Gabe, and I got really frustrated with Gabe because he only called Lucy when things were going wrong in his life. I found the end to be incredibly melodramatic. Just wasn't my thing, but I think others would enjoy it.

Beautifully written novel about the choices we make in love and life. The vignettes made this a quick read but didn't sacrifice the quality of the writing or the character development. I think if you liked "One Day" or "The Time Traveler's Wife," you'll enjoy this novel.

Executive Director of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library, Jenni Gaisbauer recently mailed me the Uncorrected Proof for Limited Distribution copy of The Light We Lost novel for free (thanks Jenni!). In the June 2p17 newsletter, she asked if anyone wanted one of the book that they'd brought back with them from the annual Book Expo in NYC and I requested one (because I'm always down for getting a new book, especially one that's free). FYI: I hadn't heard about The Light We Lost prior to getting the book; but I was interested in reading it once I received it.

Jill Santopolo has without a doubt penned a well-written adult romance novel about a former couple that can never quite let each other go. I appreciated the time frame that the story was built upon and thought that Santopolo did a good job of weaving the issues going on at the time in America in quite well with the main character's conflict. I'll admit that it wasn't a novel that wowed me; but it was a good read nonetheless. And though I'm not usually one to choose or recommend books for specific seasons, I do believe that The Light We Lost is a good book to read while on vacation during the summer.

I wish I could erase the rating. I didn't finish the book, would not recommend it. The story is supposed to be a love story . I'm not a prude but there is a difference between love and lust. So far all I can gather is that the so called love struck girl and her boyfriend were hot in bed. Also he seems to only need her when he is down on his luck. This will most likely appeal to an audience.
