"Smart, warm, uplifting, the story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes the only way to survive is to open her heart. Meet Eleanor Oliphant: she struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she's thinking. That, combined with her unusual appearance (scarred cheek, tendency to wear the same clothes year in, year out), means that Eleanor has become a creature of habit (to say the least) and a bit of a loner. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kind of friends who rescue each other from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond's big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one"-- Provided by publisher.

I lost my breath in a few places when the story was feeling a little close to home. This is an amazing debut novel and I loved getting to know Eleanor as she came to terms with herself and her past in both heartbreaking and humorous turns. I highly recommend this book.

The first thing you need to know is that Eleanor Oliphant is NOT completely fine. There was an incident when Eleanor was just 10 years old and she spent the rest of her childhood in foster care. It wasn't bad foster care but she never felt loved. Her method of communication is odd and I kept wondering if she had a form of Asperger's or if she just never learned to interact with others. She has never really had any friends and then she meets a coworker who is putting forth the effort to be friends and it triggers quite a lot of emotions for Eleanor and she isn't prepared to deal with any of them. Great read!! The last thing you need to know is that Eleanor Oliphant WILL be completely fine.

I loved this book. Eleanor Oliphant is my favourite character in quite some time. She is a wonderful, quirky but unlikely heroine who grew on me with every page. Her turn of phrase and world outlook is refreshing and funny. At times I thought the book would get to dark for me but it didn't and was in the end an uplifting story. The book is a brilliant, witty, refreshing and hopeful story that is slowly revealed to the reader.

I'd say it's a slight cut above ordinary chick lit, not nearly as good as the bucketfuls of hype would have you believe, but not terrible either. What differentiates it from standard chick lit is that Eleanor has a different style of communicating, a facial scar and profound loneliness. The resolution of her issues seems too pat. In fact, there's a lot about this novel that doesn't ring true; for example Eleanor's mother - a comic book evil Cruella, straight out of Disney, and the fact that a few months of therapy allow Eleanor to shrug her evil mother off.

A fairly serious topic underlays a light and easily read story. The author does some interesting things with character in this book and I loved the way she unfolds the story to you in bits and pieces that you are required to put together. I did feel the book dragged a bit in the middle but for the most part it was an engaging read that many people are going to enjoy.

This book was excellent. I was surprised to see that it was a debut novel, because it definitely did not read that way. This book, like an onion, revealed itself in layers. Each chapter slowly peeled away another level of Eleanor Oliphant and I went from disliking her to adoring her by the end of the book. I cannot comment too much on the book without giving away everything. It was exceptionally well-written, beautiful and delicious language and words and descriptions and you couldn't help but to relate to Eleanor. An exceptional character, a wonderful novel. A MUST READ!

I noticed "Eleanor..." in new book section, read the inner flap, & off I went....WOW!!!
Just finished & recommend it so so very highly: The characters are warm &
endearing, & Eleanor's ability to drag herself up out of the dark hole in which she'd
been living is brilliantly written.
I love this book & hope you will as well.

"I emerged from the flames like a little phoenix. I ran my fingers over the scar tissue, caressing the coutours. I didn't burn, Mummy, I thought. I walked through the fire and I lived."
Original story, sophisticated writing and heroine like no other. Great debut!
Soon to be a major motion picture produced by Reese Witherspoon.
