With hints of Ghost and Longtime Companion, Javier Fuentes-Leòn’s piercing drama is one of the most beautiful gay love stories to hit the screen in years. Miguel is a simple fisherman living in a tiny coastal village where everyone knows everyone else’s business. Very married, and with a baby on the way, he nevertheless manages to carry on a clandestine affair with Santiago, a handsome free-spirited artist who’s recently taken up residence on the outskirts of town. However, despite their obvious feelings for one another, Miguel is still plagued by Catholic guilt and that rigid code of Latin machismo which balks at the idea of two men finding warmth and passion in one another’s arms. It all changes one day when Santiago drowns at sea and his very solid spirit, in need of a proper burial, begins showing up at Miguel’s doorstep on a regular basis. After the initial shock wears off Miguel actually becomes quite pleased with this new arrangement; after all it is far easier to carry on an affair with a man no one else can see or hear. But loving a ghost (or a simple memory?) carries its own emotional toll and when the truth of Miguel’s past becomes common knowledge thanks to some incriminating artwork and a few wagging tongues he is faced with a heart-rending decision; a decision wherein either choice comes with a terrible price. Against a brilliant backdrop of pastel buildings and restless seascapes Leòn’s simple story takes on the dimensions of a modern parable as one man’s struggle with his own sexual and emotional ambivalence is given a corporeal existence. Thankfully there is none of the dramatic hyperbole one would expect from an American treatment of this subject matter (Brokeback Mountain still makes me heave). The lead actors put in completely believable performances whether it’s a teary reproach or a sensuous coupling on a deserted beach; their sex scenes are genuinely erotic, their various farewells deeply heartbreaking. Furthermore, the actress playing Mariela, Miguel’s wife, traces her character’s evolution from shocked disbelief to angry confrontation with consummate skill. While understandably confused, Mariela is never martyred but shown instead as a fellow casualty of both church and society. But metaphor and political subtext notwithstanding, Undertow is first and foremost a delicately nuanced and bittersweet romance; uncomplicated in its presentation, lyrical in style, achingly human in scope.

This is one of my favorite movies. As a gay film it tells the story of many men out there, not only in Latin America, but anywhere in the world. As a love story, it is an emotional film between three characters that love each other. The tragedy in this film leads to the best romance ever between two men. Ultimately is a story about love, tolerance and acceptance.

This film from Peru depicts the plight of a man torn between his love for his family - a wife and a new-born child - and his gay lover. So the plot is fairly unique. Good acting and a beautiful setting at a seaside town add to the merit of this film. Definitely an interesting one to sit through. Subtitles.

UNDERTOW (Peruvian title CONTRACORRIENTE) is an unusual and poignant film. It is also an exceptional movie in that it deals with a love relationship between two men who are strongly masculine individuals. Most films, especially Hollywood products, usually deal with such a theme using individuals who are gay stereotypes. The authenticity of the situations, both of the ménage a trois of Miguel, his wife Mariela, and his lover Santiago, and also the reactions and behaviors of the Peruvian villagers is both striking and compelling. I found this a very moving film, with an excellent cast and direction. Its “ghost device” for storytelling purposes could have been hokey and artificial, but in this case was a poetic enhancement and worked extremely well.

If you're gay, be very suspicious of what this movie is intending to tell you. From the 50's, the complaint of gay men was that the only images they saw of gay love were when a soldier comforted his companion as he was dying on the battlefield. As the seventies wore on, there were a few more depictions of gay men that were all not only insulting, but ended with the gay man's suicide. This is one of those. Fortunately, it does not match actual Hispanic experience anywhere, especially in coastal Peru. It's the typical Hollywood story you may remember from "Ode to Billy Joe" where the gay protagonist kills himself. THIS MOVIE IS SO BAD that at the end, in the Bonus section, there's a public service announcement from www.glaad.org (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) in Mexican Spanish telling you to please contact them if you are the subject of anti-gay bullying at home or in school. AND THE ANNOUNCEMENT NEEDS TO BE THERE. Avoid this one unless you are steeled for an unnecessarily tragic and patently false tale of hatred that doesn't allow you to suspend disbelief.

I have not seen many films from Peru, but this one was impressive. A man is torn between his wife and his male lover. Not what you'd expect from Peru. Right?

This was a phenomenal movie. It had a male gay relationship like Brokeback Mountain, but I thought the this movie was much better. It covers many different aspect of life and had a supernatural element. This is a definite must see if you like good foreign films. If you are bothered by two guys kissing and rolling around in the sand then you may not like this film, but the movie maker keeps the sex scenes to somewhat of a minimum. I really liked this movie.

This is the best Peruvian ghost story on internalized homophobia that I've seen in a long time.

Even though I did not care for the subject matter of this movie, I still found the plot interesting, moreso, the heartbreaking decision that the main character had to make at the end.

Sexual Content: Sexual encounters and love making between two gay men. So this may not be everyone's cup of tea. Not for children for sure.
