Eleven-year-old tomboy Toni is bewitched by the tight-knit dance team she sees practicing in the same Cincinnati gymnasium where she boxes with her brother. Enamored by the power and confidence of the strong community of girls, Toni neglects her boxing, and instead eagerly absorbs the dance routines and drills. But when a mysterious outbreak of fainting spells plagues the team, Toni's desire for acceptance is challenged.

I had heard complaints that The Fits is boring and that nothing happens in it, but that didn’t stop me from being glued to my TV screen from start to finish. The movie has a mesmerizing rhythm to it that’s completely lost if the viewer isn’t able to commit most (if not all) of their attention to it. First time director, Anna Rose Holmer asks for just enough from first time actor/focal point, Royalty Hightower to get me invested in Toni’s coming of age story, without over-stretching her acting abilities; something that I’m frequently bothered by with younger actors. The plot is relatively simple with some surreal elements, but what really enhances the narrative is the stark photography of the Cincinnati community center that acts as the setting, and the lingering shots of Toni that visually convey the loneliness she’s experiencing. Not everyone's cup of tea, but a movie I could watch over and over.

Oh my. This is a great movie, a great film-- the use of the stationary camera with people entering and leaving the frame is wonderful and adds to the feeling of being contained, the music/sound is beautiful and eerie, the acting throughout is spot-on, and the enigmatic ending is perfect. I loved it.

So, what do you do with a coming of age movie that appeals to neither the "Realist" crowd ( The Wire) or the bimbo battalion (Beyonce et. al.) ?

So what does that leave? The under 9 kiddie korner? The sack of reviewers with time on their hands? The Tipper Gore claque? Your guess is as good as mine.

Note - the title is a mighty red herring

a coming of age story - a young girl who spends her spare time in her brother's boxing world becomes interested in a girls dance group that practices in the same community centre. she finds that her trained boxer's body doesn't move easily to the rhythms of the dance. she also finds some mysterious behaviour flowing through the dance troop. her pre-adolescent self lives with one foot in the ring and one foot on the dance floor.

The Fits is an intriguing film about an introverted girl who navigates the intersectional terrains of gender, social groups, and personal expression. It's an art film: open to interpretation, shot beautifully with a subjective point of view, and operating on the level of symbolic or even allegorical action. Check it out!

Not as much dancing as I hoped and almost more of a psychological horror especially with that high-pitched music.
