I've watched a bunch of things from the brothers recently; I can come up with reasons why I find them so appealing. I suspect it has something to do with what they wrap up in their gritty apparent realism. Something like meetng the white hatted cowboys again for the first time. The good guys appear so in these films because somehow or another they honor a certain line not to be crossed, no matter what. Its the way of the cross, though one hopes it is not God's will to go that far.

Sokol and Lorna, two Albanian emigrants in Belgium, dream of leaving their dreary jobs to set up a snack bar. They need money, and a permanent resident status. Claudy is a junkie - he needs money to satisfy his addiction. Andrei, the cigarette smuggler, must hold up for a while outside Russia; he has loads of money. Fabio, the Italian taxi driver and aspiring gang boss, elaborates a clever scheme: he will pay Claudy to marry Lorna so that she acquires a Belgian citizenship. Then she is to re-marry Andrei, who will in this way obtain the coveted EU passport - and pay a hefty price to Fabio and Lorna for the service. Like all plans, this one will not survive the contact with reality.

Good movie about desperation, dreams, betrayal, change of behaviour and their consequences.

An emotionally intense and sophisticated drama. I want to say so much more about it, but I fear ruining it for others!

This small film from Belgium deals with a woman's struggle to make money in a foreign land while trying to maintain her minimum humanity, amidst men that would kill for profit. I find the plot interesting and the acting by the lead actress convincing. In French with subtitles.

another Dardenne-ian look under the covers of Belgian society. I love their intelligent films,

Weak story. Very slow moving. It was boring most of the time. Okay for children to watch except for two scenes. Not alot of sex or violence in it.

The Dardenne brothers are exceptionally clear eyed and nervy film makers and writers. They'll take you places you hadn't counted on going, and they'll show you situations you'd either misunderstood or ignored.
Thishas guaranteed them importance, because they are simply more valid than the great of film creators, they broaden and lift their audiences, without ever being patronizing. That is very difficult, so few try. I'm only guessing, but I believe one or more of them has been involved with journalism in their past, they have enormous edge and insight.

Tried to like it (and I love the Dardenne Brothers) but couldn't get into this film.
