As a former English major, I was pretty delighted by this book. Sure, the plot is outlandish. But if you just roll with it, you'll find yourself having a lot of fun.
What I enjoyed much more than the romance and mystery plots were the meta references to other works. In many ways, this book took me back to my own undergrad days studying British lit, and I really enjoyed that dose of nostalgia. A real treat for Bronte lovers and/or students of British lit. As long as you're willing to suspend your disbelief and view it as a fantasy of sorts, I think you'll enjoy the ride.
A fun read! I highly recommend this for when you need something light yet intriguing.
I would not recommend this book. It's an interesting story- about a descendant of the Bronte sisters who looks for answers about her past, the family history, etc. But the voice of the narrator is that of a whiny immature twenty-something girl who spends most of her time feeling sorry for herself, insulting everyone around her and generally making a nuisance. I didn't even feel sorry for her when she almost died crawling out of that well (that she stupidly flung herself into).
Samantha Whipple has always heard her family was heir to a 'treasure' of Bronte memorablilia, but has never believed it...until now..
A fun summertime read set at Oxford's Old College, with lots of allusions to the Brontes, allusions to academic obsessions, and a slow to start - and nearly impossible - romance. Good fun!
This story has a bit of everything. It is part chick-lit, part romance and part mystery. I thought it was fast paced and a bit cheeky and perfect for a fun read. It made me want to dust off my old Bronte novels and re-read them this summer.
Enjoyable, much about reading the Brontes, more about personal and family dysfunction and a little romance.
An entertaining literary caper featuring the Brontes, Bronte memoribilia, academia, and a taboo romance.
Clever, witty dialog; weak mystery; an overabundance of metaphors and similies.
Now I need to read the Bronte sisters again.
