Alternately embarrassing, amusing, baroque, grotesque and unbelievable, finally one stops wondering whether this whole movie is one long put-on, and begins simply to enjoy it. But it does take some time to decide to do that. The real standout in this is the underplaying of Hugh Grant who definitely has the most lackluster of any of the roles in his long career. He does a great, subtle job here. And Emmanuelle Seigner? Well, she did end up married to Polanski, so one assumes the perverse comes fairly easily to her. Unfortunately, there is a whiff of the gutter about her that makes it hard to accept her as an ingenue at the beginning of this opus. But have a look....as long as you don't expect this to be actually erotic, you might end up enjoying it.
