In today's new and scarier age of terrorism, the actions of a small collection of mixed-race, largely middle-class radical leftists fighting against the Vietnam War, racism, and other social ills in the 1970's seem emblematic of the cultural chaos of the era, nothing more. The event of 1974 occurred when a group calling themselves the Symbionese Liberation Army kidnapped19-year-old newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst in Berkeley, California. The crime received nearly round-the-clock coverage, and made the SLA into counterculture superstars. There are gaps in the story but the film contains rare and long unseen newsreel footage, interviews with two SLA members, and offers a fascinating portrait of not only a kind of psychopathic idealism but also a whole era of extraordinary social turmoil.
