Dickens' tale of an apprentice given the chance to become a gentleman is now that of a young Florida artist named Finn, given the chance to become a success in 1990s New York. First, a mysterious convict bullies Finn into saving his life. Next, Finn is summoned to an overgrown Gothic palazzo where Nora Dinsmoor lives in the past, attended by beautiful blonde Estella, who will haunt him through the rest of the story. Last, there is secret benefactor whose munificence allows him to work toward his dream of success, and to win Estella.

This modern-day rendition of Dickens' famous novel on the big screen is based on a much simplified plot, hence missing much details. While the idea may be novel, the execution of it falls short of my 'expectation'. I am disappointed as director Alfonso Cuaron can do much better work.

People who have not read Charles Dickens' novel will likely not fully appreciate the brilliance of the modern re-telling of this classic tale of boy-meets-girl, albeit with a shocking Dickensian twist. Hawke's 'Pip', naive artist Finn Bell, is played exceptionally sensitively, and Anne Bancroft is deliciously over-the-top as the eccentric Dinsmore. As an artist and dreamer, this is one of my all-time favorites and I watch it often.
