In between "Once upon a time" and "They lived happily ever after" - This film's story really let me down in a big way. I had heard a lot about this 1946 fantasy film, but it just didn't deliver an engrossing enough tale of enchantment and magic to hold my attention for very long.

I guess that because this was a French production a lot of its wonder got lost on me. 'Cause I get the impression that they seem to view things quite differently over there than we do in here North America. And that, of course, played a major part in how this film's story was presented to its audience.

Yes. I certainly do recall seeing 1946's "Beauty and the Beast" on television as a child. And, I do remember that it did leave an impression on me.

But, seeing it now, after all that time - I found that the intended enchantment of this 72-year-old fantasy-romance picture got completely lost on me and left me dead-cold.

For the most part - I found that not only was the beast a pretty silly boy - But, a lot of the time the story's situations (along with its character portrayals) seemed somehow unnecessarily forced and absurd to the point of being a literal pain in the neck.

And, with that all said and done - I ask you this - Why is it that French actors from that era in movie-making often had an annoying tendency to over-act their part when they really should have been down-playing a scene? Eh? Why?

I liked this fiction Drama Love Story DVD. It is too scary for children. This is the main story very different than what Disney did. There is no singing or music. It is based on the original French story. It is spoken in English. It is well done.

What a beautiful movie-Wow..

Black and white
In French with English subtitles.

The most beautiful photography-just like paintings. Such a moving story. The most beautiful woman is Belle. The magical special effects are just wonderful.

Don't miss the the extras, especially how much work goes into the remastering and the makeup.

One of my favourites for decades; all performances are superb, especially Jean Marais as the beast.

Neat old special effects. A beautiful movie. The acting took a lot to get used to.

Not mentioned in the 'full record' description, but I believe this Criterion edition includes an alternative sountrack - an opera in French composed by Phillip Glass. Highly recommended!!!
