Summary:
"In 2012, New Zealand's most well-known documentarians, Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, teamed up to follow a group of Wellington-based vampires. Yes, actual, real vampires. The resulting film is a raw, unflinching look at the lives of the undead community, and no stone unturned. From hunting victims and draining their blood to more mundane activities like paying the rent and keeping the house tidy, What We Do In The Shadows documents their struggles, fears and dreams and asks the question 'If your heart is cold and dead, are you actually dead?' Obviously, you are, but are you truly really DEAD dead?"--Container insert.

Piotr (aka Peter). Tom Petty. Just saying.
I was surprised how much I like this.
I would call it a sleeper hit:
Four flat mates in New Zealand being filmed by a documentary crew.
The flat mates are vampires from different eras....'nuff said.
Give it a shot, you'll like it.
This has got to be one of my favourite movies of all time. That being said, it is quirky and full of vampire gags. What is it about? A group of vampire flatmates, living in modern-day New Zealand, coping with day-to-day trials such as the neighbouring band of werewolves, an upcoming vampire gala and pesky familiars. I've watched it several times now, and it still makes me laugh. In a nutshell, it's a bit like "This is Spinal Tap" meets "Dracula." The cast is brilliant and it's actually quite heartwarming in places. Give it a go if you want something a little different.
Absolutely hilarious! Even if you're not into the whole vampire thing. I don't care one iota about them, but this movie is excellent - This is Taika at his best! There is however a TV show that is currently out - I've seen it and ...nah. The movie: 10 stars! (The TV show: maybe 3 or 4)
Has recently been made into a TV show that is nearly as clever and funny as the film. Jemaine Clement created it for TV and directs a few episodes. Taika Waititi directed the pilot.
A silly vampire spoof that has its moments, B-
I'd heard excellent things about this flick by Taika Waititi--the New Zealander talent behind 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople' which I thought was excellent. Unfortunately they don't have the Closed Captions that anyone who's hearing impaired needs.
He's also the writing/directing talent of several other flicks that I gather are as fresh, original, free of Hollywood-like ingratiation (Boy; Thor, Ragnarok; and Eagle vs Shark). Unfortunately, they too suffer from the same oversight.
A brilliant spoof of the vampire genre, via a spoof of the documentary style. Also a refreshing twist/reworking of the vampire genre. I am surprised this has never been done before. Pairs well with the TV series from these creators. Laughs guaranteed.
A fun mockumentary that has become my Halloween favorite! If you like shows like the Office and its style, then you will like this movie. The humor is mostly found in subtle dialog or visuals which just adds to the charm of the movie. It isn't a movie that forces you to laugh a certain parts, but a movie that provides a fun story, with humor often involved. I highly recommend!
