I don't know anything about professional wrestling. Anything at all. I don't even particularly care to learn about it. That said, I love John Darnielle's unabashed enthusiasm about wrestling. I'm no music critic, but I do love seeing other people geek out about the things they're passionate about. Even if you know nothing about wrestling, give this album a try. Heel Turn 2 is one of personal favorite songs and most certainly worth a listen...or 5,000. Other, less serious songs include "Werewolf Gimmick," about a wrestler who may or may not be an actual werewolf and "Foreign Object." The latter song contains the lyrics, "I'm going to stab you in the eye with a foreign object," backed with bouncy music. Incredibly fun to sing with a large group of people at concerts.

A magnificent ode to the professional wrestling heroes of singer-songwriter John Darnielle's youth. At times joyous ("The Legend of Chavo Guerrero," "Foreign Object," "The Ballad of Bull Ramos"), at times forlorn ("Southwestern Territory," "Heel Turn 2"), Beat the Champ runs the same gamut of emotions you come to expect from Mountain Goats records.
