Charisma isn't a very charismatic book. It's actually crap. Would not recommend.

A creative and probing look at contemporary health issues, “Charisma’ is a powerful YA novel, one that manages to be clever, insightful and moving. Aislyn suffers from a shyness so crippling it amounts to a social disorder, one that leaves her breathless, dizzy and prone to vomiting or near collapse. It’s painful to read, almost as much as the harshly rendered accounts of her brother’s constant battle with cystic fibrosis. Anyone who’s ever been too shy to speak up in public, who gets paralyzed when approached by strangers or breaks into flop sweats when trying to meet a prospective other will nod in sympathy when they read about the agonizing (and hysterical) results of her efforts to mingle at a party.

Aislyn’s attempt to change her personality via chemical enhancement has far-reaching implications and deadly consequences. The book is a fast-paced, exciting medical thriller as well as a YA romance. It’s filled with plot twists, scenes of genuine thrills, meaningful dialogue and interaction among the myriad characters that fill its pages. It poses its unspoken question in such a way that you can’t help but ask yourself and those you know, “If you could do anything to make yourself the life of the party, bend those around you to your will or see you as perfect—would you?”
