"Death sets the plot in motion: the murder of Nica Baker, beautiful, wild, enigmatic, and only sixteen. The crime is solved, and quickly--a lonely classmate, unrequited love, a suicide note confession--but memory and instinct won't allow Nica's older sister, Grace, to accept the case as closed. Dropping out of college and living at home, working at the moneyed and progressive private high school in Hartford, Connecticut, from which she recently graduated, Grace becomes increasingly obsessed with identifying and punishing the real killer"-- provided by publisher.
"[M]urder and glamour set in the ambiguous and claustrophobic world of an exclusive New England prep school"-- provided by publisher.

Some of it is very compelling and the main character's self-centeredness, angst and being black-and-white judgmental is bang-on teenager, well done. But the book manages to take a boarding-school murder in a small town and cram in every possible secret or crime imaginable: rape! Murder! Incest! Illicit affairs! Drug addiction! Suicide! Homosexuality! Parental sociopathy! Alcoholism! Betrayal! EVERYONE in the book has a secret and it's a dark, scandalous, SINFUL one. The plot would have been well-served by cutting down all the melodrama.

a book that leaves this reader feeling that living in a self-entitled community that moral and ethical ambiguity triumph and that the innocent will be slandered and ostracized. also the massive use of deus ex machina is beyond ludicrous, especially in the epilogue. also, i find it disgusting that a possibly murdered gay student is left blamed as the killer.
