This outstanding collection of quintessentially English short stories is marked by characteristic subtle understatement and by the melancholy recognition of the transience of life. Both are qualities unlikely to appeal to readers with little sensitivity to minutely-observed nuances of human behaviour. Several stories deal with an awareness on the part of some elderly protagonists, if not the author himself, of the imminence of death, and of the fragility of happiness. Taken as a whole, the stories deal with the changing social landscape that is cosmopolitan English life today, with immigration, marriage, bereavement, and isolation as some of the serious subjects raised in the context of stories in which very little seems to happen. But these are not comic-book action stories, are they?

Solid, but unexceptional, stories from a good writer.

Could not bring myself to finish this. Tried three short stories. Descriptions good but found the stories pointless.
