Story of irish Immigtrants through generations in Canada. Perhaps I would have liked better if I had read more quickly. I had a hard time connecting to the people and story. Seemed disjointed to me.

Alice Munro shows her storytelling mastery in this collection describing her family's journey from Scotland to their life in Canada.

This book has a lot of actual life experiences of the author from which "The Lives of Girls and Women" is drawn. That book seemed sort of "musty and old fashioned." This one is much more alive and compelling. The cover, it should be pointed out, has nothing whatsoever to do with the text.

October 10, 2013: The 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to Canadian author Alice Munro, "master of the contemporary short story"!

Ridiculous to be awarding stars to collections by the great Munro. I didn't like this quite as much as "Too Much Happiness", the recent collection I read before this one, but it's still very strong. I need to go back and read or reread some of her earlier work.

Ms. Munro has done her usual superb job - in this case weaving together stories resulting from a personal exploration of her father's side of the family. Anyone who knows Ontario will be happy with her sense of place - and her excellent descriptive powers. Tell a story - weave a tale - bring in the reader and viola - another masterpiece by our very own Alice.
