In the latest installment of the Hildafolk series, Hilda is thrust into a new life in the bustling city of Trolberg, far from the magic and wonder of her birthplace in the Fjords. Lamenting the loss of her enchanting, wooded surroundings, Hilda wonders if she'll ever recapture the same excitement in this strange new concrete forest. Hilda is set for a thunderbolt of surprise as she discovers that her new city is not quite as plain as it seems and neither is the impending and mysterious annual Bird Parade!

Equally charming whether the series is set in the city or country. Just loved it.

A country girl moves to the big city and meets a magical creature while trying to find her way back to her new home. Gorgeously realized in autumnal hues, the panoramic streetscapes pull you into her strange new world.

I didn't fall in love with the first Hilda book I read, but I saw something in it that made me want to try another. I'm glad I did, as I was much more thoroughly taken with this one. It's still characterized by whimsy, quirkiness, and a thoughtful central character, I just felt this one had more to say--or at least said it more effectively. This is a book that takes children very seriously--specifically Hilda's perspective and concerns--and is a champion of the oft-overlooked small. It doesn't skirt around conflict, fear, challenges, and sadness, yet it explores those issues through an odd, fun story. The pleasant illustrations make great use of perspective and always communicate clearly. I'm ready for the next one.
