It's gotta be rough for Nas, as he will forever be measured by his debut, "Illmatic," which is a classic of 90s hip-hop and as representative of the period as "Enter the 36 Chambers" and "Ready to Die." Along with those albums and Jay-Z's debut, it helped re-establish NYC as a rap powerhouse. "Illmatic" received the coveted 5 mics score from "The Source" and Nas seemed aware of how beloved the album is when he called a later album "Stillmatic." All that said, his second album, "It Was Written, is a solid achievement and spawned some of his best singles, "Street Dreams" and "If I Ruled the World," the latter of which featured Lauryn Hill. Foxy Brown appears on a couple tracks and Dre produced "Nas is Coming." If you find little to relate to in contemporary hip-hop, this will remind you of how good it was in the 90s (Not to get all nostalgic).
