Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. Alchemists protect vampire secrets -- and human lives. Sydney would love to go to college, but instead, she's been sent into hiding at a posh human boarding school in Palm Springs, California -- tasked with protecting Moroi princess Jill Dragomir from assassins who want to throw the Moroi court into civil war. Formerly in disgrace, Sydney is now praised for her loyalty and obedience, and held up as the model of an exemplary Alchemist. But the closer she grows to Jill, Eddie, and especially Adrian, the more she finds herself questioning her age-old Alchemist beliefs, her idea of family, and her sense of what it means to truly belong. Her world becomes even more complicated when magical experiments show Sydney may hold the key to prevent becoming Strigoi -- the fiercest vampires, the ones who don't die. But it's her fear of being just that -- special, magical, powerful -- that scares her more than anything. Equally daunting is her new romance with Braydon, a cute, brainy guy who seems to be her match in every way. Yet, as perfect as he seems, Sydney finds herself being drawn to someone else -- someone forbidden to her. When a shocking secret threatens to tear the vampire world apart, Sydney's loyalties are suddenly tested more than ever before. She wonders how she's supposed to strike a balance between the principles and dogmas she's been taught, and what her instincts are now telling her. Should she trust the Alchemists -- or her heart?

3/9 - Another fantastic installation in this series (and by 'series' I include the Vampire Academy books as well). Read it over two very late nights, so fast that I didn't have the time or inclination to stop to make notes or write an interim review like I usually do, so this'll have to be a slightly briefer review than is normal for me.

I'm really loving Sydney (except for the alliteration) Sage as the MC for this spinoff series. I'm not positive, but I think I might like her better than Rose. She makes noticeably less (or almost none) stupid mistakes and doesn't behave like a wild and reckless teenager (despite being the same age as Rose), which makes her much easier to sympathise with, and agree with. Jill is turning out to be a nice, stable, secondary heroine and while I can't completely forget his behaviour in the Vampire Academy books I no longer find Adrian hateable. There's still some teen angst (Eddie!!) and a teenage girl who makes stupid decisions (Angeline), but she's not billed as an intelligent and 'special' girl who's going to save them all and she's not THE VOICE we have to listen throughout the series so it's more acceptable.

I don't get why the protagonist would be attracted to the "bad guy". He's irresponsible and mooches off her money. And constantly postures. Why would someone so competent have any patience with that?
And on a minor note, she is fastidious about her studies and work in general but apparently not her grammar. "Me, neither" is the correct response, not "Me either". It jars a bit.

Book 2 in Bloodlines series, preceded by Bloodlines and followed by Indigo Spells. This series is not as good as VA but it is still very enjoyable. Finally both Adrian and Sydney are becoming better characters - let's see where that takes us

Such a great sequel to Bloodlines. I loved Bloodlines and was hoping that this book would live up to Bloodlines' standards. And it sure did. I devoured this book in a day and am now moving on to Indigo Spell.

Richelle Mead always writes amazing books. This is the second book in the Bloodlines series and although it did drag, about 200 pages in it started to pick up. I was secretly wanting Rose to pop up through out the book, I was not disappointed with the story line. I cannot wait for the third book to come out and can only hope this series is as good as Vampire Academy.

Just finished the second book in the Bloodlines series and while it was interesting, I must say that it dragged a bit for me. Yes, the ending was great - and I did want to slap Sidney too - but not altogether unpredictable. Many story points were actually quire predictable. Regardless, it is still great entertainment and I will definitely read the next installment. Oh, and do read the Vampire Academy series first. It will make you appreciate and like this spin off, and help you tollerate some of its shortcoming too.

I own this book, and I love it! I cried at the end, and I honestly hope Sydney gets her act together, because really, WHO TURNS DOWN ADRIAN? Is she nuts? Like, I would marry him, honest to God! I didn't like Brayden, I thought he was kinda stupid, but that's just me...

It would be better to read The Vampire Academy first! :) This series is a spin-off series of The Vampire Academy. Both series, Vampire Academy and Bloodlines, are awesome! Bloodlines is mostly about human alchemist Sydney and VA's about Rose, a dhampir. I highly recommend this book!
