A person who'd like to read a good book involving fictional characters during the western expansion but who doesn't want to be observed carrying around Louis L'Amour novels can begin a good, long reading voyage with these AB Guthrie books beginning with the Big Sky. The characters aren't cardboard cutouts, the plotting is tight and the book was written and published during an era when publishing houses edited the books and didn't pad them with dozens of pages of introspection, gratuitous sexual tittilations, and dragging unnecessary dialogue.
