Julia Franck has a most unusual and in many ways despicable family, described in her first book on her father's side and in this book, on her depressive mother's side. It is set mostly during the building of the Berlin Wall and provides a portrait of an oppressive family and by extension political life. Although well-written, it tries unsuccessfully to extrapolate a general message from a very particular situation.
