"Former Mayor Ed Koch was the quintessential New Yorker. Ferocious, charismatic, and hilariously blunt, Koch, who died in February 2013 at the age of 88, ruled New York from 1978 to 1989--a down-and-dirty decade of grit, graffiti, near-bankruptcy and rampant crime... The tumult of his three terms included a fiercely competitive 1977 election; an infamous 1980 transit strike; the burgeoning AIDS epidemic; landmark housing renewal initiatives; and an irreparable municipal corruption scandal. Through candid interviews and rare archival footage, Koch thrillingly chronicles the personal and political toll of running the world's most wondrous city in a time of upheaval and reinvention"--Container.

Wonderful, humorous, and revealing documentary of Ed Koch, a three-term mayor of NYC. There's so many aspects of this film to take note of, but what was most interesting was his larger-than-life personality and charisma. And he had a respectable combination of keeping his private affairs private, precisely because one of his first acts to change public policy was to establish non-discrimination protections of LGBT persons which was consistent with his record as a US Congressman. He is a colorful politician who held on to his Jewish faith and supported differences and diversity.

Great! Did I say Great? GREAT! I highly recommend this documentary about the highly revered and controversial Mayor Ed Koch and New York City. Be sure to watch the Extras to the documentary.

I really enjoyed this film. Made before his death, it not only includes historical footage, but also comments from Koch about different things that happened during his years as Mayor. The film is not presented in strictly chronological order-it is presented by themes, and then with chronology within those themes. It took me a little effort to follow that, but once I got the hang of it, that was okay. Not everyone would be interested in this-it is definately a documentary-but for those who do have an interest in history, Koch was certainly a major figure in NYC for many years. I did not watch all the bonus features but can highly recommend the bonus feature of an interview Koch gave (in fact, it was the last interview of his life) in which he talks with a local NYC press person about the film (which he saw before it was released to the public) and comments on may things shown in the film. That feature is short-about 20 minutes or so.

Ed Koch, during his unsuccessful run for a 4th term as NYC mayor: 'The people threw me out and now the people must be punished.'
