John Singleton's follow up to "Boyz N the Hood" did not get a lot of love, although, contrary to what I thought, it wasn't a total bomb. Singleton definitely took a risk in casting 2 musicians in the lead roles: Janet Jackson (Justice) and Tupac Shakur (Lucky). They could've called it "When Justice Met Lucky." Jackson's good, but this was pretty much it for her film career, while Shakur has presence and charisma, but isn't terribly convincing as a mailman. In fact, much of the plot revolves around a mail run (seriously) from L.A. to Oakland. The acting is good, but the direction is a little sluggish and the plot feels stretched out. Oscar winner Regina King co-stars and Tone Loc has a bit part. Somewhat surprisingly, there's little of Shakur's or Jackson's music used on the soundtrack. Followed by "Higher Learning."
