"Years ago, Jacob Kurtz was a happy family man, long-retired from the life of crime he was raised in. Then the police made him the prime suspect in a horrible crime and ripped his life apart. Now Jacob is less than a shadow of his former self, an insomniac who roams the city at night, looking for anything to distract him from his empty bed. Until he walks into the wrong place at the right time, and one bad night starts Jacob down a twisted path to kidnapping, robbery, murder-- and just maybe the answer to the mystery buried in his past""-- p. I think anyone who likes the stories of Jim Thompson, or any noir crime thrillers, will love this. I was never a big fan of crime comics so I hesitated to pick up this series. This isn't quite like the older crime comics from EC, though. It's a tense story that reads like one of Thompson's novels. Now I see what all the fuss over Ed Brubacker's writing is about. The situation goes from bad to worse to horrible and nothing the protagonist does can change his fate. And the dark and dirty art by Sean Phillips makes this story an even rougher ride to Hell. I'm hooked and will be looking for more of the Criminal series.
