At 1:15 a.m, a Minnesota political fixer answers his doorbell. The next thing he knows, he's waking up on the floor of a moving car, lying on a plastic sheet, his body wet with blood. When the car stops, a voice says, "Hey, I think he's breathing," and another voice says, "Yeah? Give me the bat." And that's the last thing he ever knows. Lucas Davenport is investigating another case when the trail leads to the man's disappearance, then--very troublingly--to the Minneapolis police department itself, and then--most troublingly of all--to a woman who could give Machiavelli lessons. She has very definite ideas about the way the world should work, and the money, ruthlessness, and sheer will to make it happen. No matter who gets in the way.

A political thriller where the author gets the details of a major campaign correct. And then adds a volatile: one of the candidates is a fabulously rich and beautiful but narcissistic woman with serious criminal tendencies who is close to, but not, winning. The election is less than two weeks away when US Senator from Minnesota Porter Smalls, who is looking like he will be re-elected, is found to have child pornography on his office computer. Was it a dirty trick? The furor hits the media. His poll numbers plummet and his opponent vaults over him. The Governor calls in his friend Lucas Davenport of the BCA because he is certain Smalls was framed. "This sort of thing is going too far," he says. Bodies pile up and fingers begin to point in the direction of Small's opponent Taryn Grant who employs two very questionable individuals in her security detail. The race to election day, and the pressure Davenport and team feel to resolve the case before then, is excruciating. A great ride.

I like Sanford best when he goes after politicians and it seems Minnesota has an endless supply of really snarky ones. Kidd and Co. added nice background doing tech things and being larcenous on the side. Did this one get away, we will be seeing the nasty Sen. Grant again I betcha!

Flip, smart and very clever. Usual John Sandford with Lucas Davenport and his off-siders on the case! Dirty politics this time.

John Sandford delivers again. It was excellent. I always love the banter between the guys, almost as much has the developing plot. Spoiler Alert! It can't be helped. I was disappointed and angry that the politician didn't get her comeuppance, but was thrilled when Lucas said that once they do it once, and get a taste of it, they would be back again. So some where down the line there will be another book about the narcissistic Taryn Grant. It should be awesome!

Very solid work by Sandford. Not the best book but good enough to keep you entertained and reading until the end

Surprisingly good (after the severe disapointment with his "Phantom Prey"). Really does a nice job on the plotting this time (and it makes sense) and includes the hacker characters, Kidd & wife-the-professional-burglar to add to the story. Love the inclusion of the psychopathic politician, a little reality never hurts a novel!

This latest Lucas Davenport novel is pretty good. The plot line is twisty, things get out of control, and not everything comes out OK. Hard to put it down!

While I 'm a John Sandford fan, and
have read some of the Lucas Davenport Prey books, I 'm really a Virgil Flowers ("that f Flowers") fan. Can't wait for the next Virgil book, supposed to be released in Oct. Having said that, the Prey books are good reads, I just like Virgil better.

John Sandford & Lucas Davenport at their best! Devious plot and characters, suspense, plot moves along briskly, altogether a rewarding read.
