It was a good book, but as others have commented it is a bit difficult to grasp. I kept waiting for the point where it all came together, but it didn't. The short stories are all interesting and entertaining, but there was not that point where it all made sense where it was leading. I finally just decided I would skip ahead to the end of the book. I knew what happened, but still didn't really care.

Worst book ever!

I'm having a hard time rating this book. It is amazingly beautifully written. It's lyrical. The format was a bit hard to approach and get into. It skips around in time and place and is told in very short stories/vignettes. The author, Houston, demands that the reader come to her level, which I really liked. She does not spoon feed the characters or their context in the story to you. You have to pay attention to figure out who the people are and who they are to the narrator, and it's not easy to do. It's not a book that you can casually read, you have to sit down and pay attention, the writing will make you want to.

That all being said, I got a little worn down by the narrator. I got to the point where I didn't really care what her issues were. That's the reason why I couldn't go all the way to five stars
