A dangerous, homeless drifter who grew up picking  cotton in virtual slavery. An upscale art dealer accustomed to the world of Armani and Chanel. A gutsy woman with a stubborn dream. A story so incredible no novelist would dare dream it.

It begins outside a burning plantation hut in Louisiana. . . and an East Texas honky-tonk . . .and, without a doubt, in the heart of God. It unfolds in a Hollywood hacienda . . . an upscale New York gallery . . . a downtown dumpster. . . a Texas ranch.
Gritty with pain and betrayal and brutality, it also shines with an unexpected, life-changing love.
This incredible retelling now includes an interview with the authors and a reader's guide that is perfect for individual or group study.
The most inspirational and emotionally gripping story of faith, fortitude, and friendship I have ever read. A powerful example of the healing, restorative power of forgiveness and the transformational, life changing power of unconditional love. --Mark Clayman, Executive Producer for the Academy Award-nominated The Pursuit of Happyness
Denver Moore and Ron Hall's story is one that moved me to tears. The friendship that forms between these two men at a time when both were in great need is an inspiration to all of us to be more compassionate to everyone we come in contact with. This is truly a wonderful book! --Mrs. Barbara Bush

A friend recommended this book and I am so glad they did. This is a true story written by a "modern-day slave" and an "international art dealer". The two were brought together by an amazing woman of God and their lives will never be the same. The book had a little bit of everything (from history to healing and grieving to God), but the biggest thing that I took away is that one person CAN make a difference! You can impact a life, you can impact your community and you can impact the world!

I am trying to check out a book club kit - not one title.

Real life story - I did not want to believe that Denver, the African American male character, had such a horrendous upbringing. It's a fascinating look at the power of caring for our fellow man and doing something instead of just talking about doing something to make a real difference to help people who need help. Had a hard time reading the end when the wife gets cancer.

Engaging, thought provoking story that I found hard to put down. It left me wanting to read more about the homeless mans life.

Wonderful non fiction book that takes you into the life of a homeless man.

Although the subject of the book was not what I expected, I found that it addressed an area of American history that few writers have done. The duel subjects of homelessness and the plight of sharecroppers in the south was a novel approach and undoubtely new to many readers.

I usually run quickly and in the opposite direction of anything "heartwarming". Also, anything written, even in part, in dialect. Also, anyone's evangelically-inclined personal account of their relationship with their God. And yet, I kept reading this book. It's an interesting human story.

Sad books change you in a way that no fiction book can.

Brief Review: In alternating chapters, it talks about a black man's struggles growing up in the south and a middle-class white man living in Texas earning money as an art dealer. Then it ties in a religious, powerful woman who changes their lives.
