Regardless "Tony"'s acting, the portrayal is overstated to clownish as to make me feel repulsed by Steven. While in the book, as revealed by brilliant monologues, I was deeply amused by his humor and subtly captivated by his self-inflicted failure.
Miss Kenton is quite vivid as what I'd expected.
The minor characters became composites out of the book , and brought together to create more dramatic effect.
Cinematography is mostly indoors, the rich texture of shadows brought out human emotions, quite alluring. But enchanting and melancholy (contextual) landscape is slighted, so is the power of protagonists' journey through life.
I guess a film has many limitations to bring out a great book.

This exquisite Merchant Ivory production of Kazuo Ishiguro's acclaimed novel is. . .Sorry, fell asleep for a minute. It's very understated. The message is don't be an emotionally repressed English butler

Great companion to the book with excellent documentaries.

I enjoyed this movie. Love Anthony Hopkins, it was wonderful to see Christopher Reeve before his accident. He was perfect for the part he played. Recommend this movie if you like period movies.

Rated 7/10.

The age gap between the butler and the housekeeper made it hard for this viewer to believe in the blossoming of romance between these characters. The impact of Lord Darlington's actions would have been clearer if the newly-wed servant couple had died in the Blitz as well as the Lord's god-son, journalist. Christopher Reeve was a poor choice for his role (except as a box office draw).

British made, so slow moving, action-less story line. It is wonderful and perfect for a rainy day or a blue mood. You don't need to have read the book to know what is going on. Brilliant acting all around.

Very sad film of an English butler's admirable honor and dedication to his craft, through which with the passing of time ironically translates into bad choices. Sir Anthony realizes too late his misappropriated loyalty to his 'duty', and his devotion to values devoid of merit, shaping him into a rigid emotionless (but dignified!) robot... effectively resulting in romantic meaningful opportunities forever lost with the woman he loved but didn't have the social skills to approach. He and Emma Thompson are both magnificent; skillfully directed by James Ivory.

A really well made movie. Loved the story and anything with Anthony Hopkins makes it more special to watch. Very touching.

(Strolling through the backyard discussing a young housemaid) Miss Kenton: "Ah, very pretty girl, don't you think?" Mr. Stevens: "Mm-hmm." Miss Kenton (playfully): "Mm! You don't like, to have pretty girls on the staff though, noticed. ...Might it be that our Mr. Stevens... fears distraction? Can it be that our Mr. Stevens is flesh and blood after all, and cannot trust himself? Hmm?" Mr. Stevens: "You know what I am doing Miss Kenton? I am placing my thoughts elsewhere, while you chatter away."
