In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue -- Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is -- she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are -- and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves, or it might destroy her. Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series -- dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance. - Jacket flap.
In a future Chicago, sixteen-year-old Beatrice Prior must choose among five predetermined factions to define her identity for the rest of her life, a decision made more difficult when she discovers that she is an anomaly who does not fit into any one group, and that the society she lives in is not perfect after all.

One of the best series I have ever read! Every character has their own back story which makes it really interesting book to read.

Man, so I went into this movie absolutely oblivious to the books; which is a first for me - I usually have read the newest YA craze on the block. But I was pleasantly surprised by this one - it was absolutely wonderful. I fell in love with the portrayal of Tris Prior by Shane Woodley. I felt confident after watching it - she gave me confidence. I then went to read the first in the series and became even more hyped. Then I made the mistake of googling the series. Had a spoiler thrown in my face - and it kind of ruined the rest of this series for me. I just felt betrayed a little bit by everything, it does not end well for certain characters. If you're looking for something that uplifts you and keeps you running high on positivity - this series is probably not for you.

I love this series! Since I am always confused about which book comes next and stuff here's a guide: #1 Divergent #2 Insurgent #3 Allegiant. And Four is Tobias's point of view and takes place in the past but it also overlaps a few chapters into Divergent (it contains spoilers too)

A sharply-written first novel in a series that has now become famous. This teen SF novel will be popular with the same readers who liked *The Hunger Games* series, especially young women looking for a strong heroine breaking away from a limited existence and facing difficult and deadly odds.

In the generations after a war which has destroyed much of Chicago, the residents have divided into 5 “factions”, each based on a philosophical principle. Beatrice, just turned 16, has grown up in the Abnegation faction, which believes that selfishness was the cause of the disasters of the past. Once a year all of the 16 year-olds go through aptitude tests to inform them about which faction matches their personality. Beatrice finds her personal toughness but also finds hints that this society of factions has the potential to come apart violently.

Very exciting, page-turning story with good main characters, although the “villains” are stereotyped. Still, not many flaws for a first novel, and the energy of the story and writing style carry the reader over any beginner bumps.

I have read that of Divergent, and it pretty good. First I have to watch the movie and then read the book.
The ending was great. I think you should all read it.

I was left wanting more after reading the Hunger Games series and I came across this book. Right away, I was drawn in by the similarities with the post-war/post-apocalyptic setting. Beatrice is coming upon her sixteenth birthday. Her society is divided into five classes, each with their life-long calling and role. Every member of society chooses which group they wish to belong to at the age of sixteen; but should that choice be different from their family, they will never see them again. I was ecstatic to find such an intriguing, exciting and adventurous story. I know you’ll love it too! (submitted by SMC)

Violence: Yes, of course Divergent would have violence. It's like The Hunger Games that way. For example, getting stab in the eye with a butterknife, fighting each other as a test, and being under simulation and killing off all the people of one faction. That's alot already.
