At the time this film was made, we lived in a very different world. Now, it's much scarier. This is a true story told just as it happened. Few American women understand that when you marry a Muslim man, you become a citizen of Islam. That means the US embassy can't help you. You are considered the property of your husband and so are all of your children, even any children that are not the children of your spouse. That should make you think twice about marrying a Muslim unless you too are Muslim. At the time Betty Mahmoody married her husband, she thought he was picture perfect. Fast forward years later and he has become an abusive nightmare. Sounds like most marriages with one huge catch--they're in a Muslim country, Iran, and she has no rights. She is mere property and so is her daughter. I was disappointed that she waited so long before realizing she would have to use illegal means to escape, but then this was almost two decades ago and things were very different back then. Expect poor production values as this is an older film, but a gripping story nonetheless. If you like this film, you'll probably enjoy Argo with Ben Affleck. More recent and just as gripping.

The moral to this story is probably "never trust a spouse". Especially if the spouse is Israeli, Arabic, Persian or Turkish. Sally Field did a great job as always. Good movie.

THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST FILM MADE FOR IMMIGRANTS IN MULTI-ETHNIC MATRIMONY.

The cultural shock & the struggle of immigrants to cope with stereotypical harassment in society & the hardship for adjustment, the homesickness & sacrifices of a family torn oceans apart between two continents, breaking & pushing the family to extreme deadly measures.

Very admirable story, excellent & persuasive script & convincing scenery.

some violence that may be too much for younger children when the husband is beating on his wife
