The introduction says the film wants to convey the "magic of India" after its people have immigrated to far away lands like the US, but the movie plays on stereotypes and melodrama. The 3 "rules" that a mistress of spices must follow make no sense. For example, the mistress must never set foot out of her shop. How is she to stock her shop with spices? What if she can't find housing conveniently above her shop? Disappointing.

Loved the movie, about a woman who had magical powers through her spices, as the spices turn against her harming things in her path. Now I must read the book.

This is a gorgeous movie, filmed sensually and sumptuously. Unfortunately, I think I wasn't quite in the right mood for it when I saw it. I was having problems not snorting out loud at certain parts, like when the lead character asks - without a *hint* of irony - "Why are you warning me, chillies?" Yes. The chillies. They warn her. And she talks back! Okay, it's an internal dialogue, but still. I just... I think my suspension of disbelief was broken or something.

Objectively speaking, I have no idea why this movie struck me as hilarious when I loved *Chocolat* to death. It's the same sort of concept: a mysterious lady arrives in town with ancient cultural knowledge of the power of food; sexy, sultry times ensue. If you liked *Chocolat*, you will probably like this movie for a lot of the same reasons. I will have to give it another shot on a day when my will to sarcasm is not so overpowering.

Not much like the book, but a gorgeous film.
