Barely an hour later, his father stabbed by an unknown assailant. Before dying, he warns Ned to "be very careful." But of whom? Of what? I find the Francis books great reads--well thought out mystery and solution. I have one quibble, though: The women in their books, including this one, are such sickly, weak people. When a strong female character appears, she gets passed over as somehow unsuitable and fades into the background. The strong male heroes don't seem to be able to handle a healthy give and take relationship. They're basically loners.

I am a great fan of D.F., but I found his main character in this novel to be extremely depressing. He spent too much time reflecting on how much bookies are hated. I'd give it a one star.
