I recently borrowed a DVD titled Finding Steve McQueen which was rather unremarkable. In it the main character plays a McQueen like character and his favorite McQueen film is Bullitt. I had to think, have I ever seen Bullitt? I have seen The Great Escape, Papillion and the Magnificent Seven, but not Bullitt so I borrowed it from SPL. Their copy is a two disc set; the film and a DVD of extras containing a 90 minute documentary called the Essence of Cool. It covers McQueen’s film and has some of his wives, his son, the men who played his stunt doubles; the guy who rode the motorcycle at the end of The Great Escape and the guy who drove the Dodge Charger car in Bullitt. McQueen chases them in his Mustang Fastback . Most of the people commenting in the bonus extras said the Bullitt script wasn’t great, the story kind of murky but the film is best known for the car chase. It’s not really an action flick of the 21st century, but McQueen plays a cop, ordered to watch over a witness who is scheduled to testify for a politician, the witness gets killed an McQueen has to deal with the politician and organized crime mobsters. Not a great film, but classic cool McQueen.

The best car chase scenes in San Francisco, wish the movie was longer. Steve McQueen classic coolness.

Film seemed so quaint after watching Mad Max, Lethal Weapon, CSI, Fast & Furious franchise & good old nightly news showing crazier car chases & shootouts with more firepower. Car chase got a "so what" reaction.

A period cop film of the swinging late 1960's in San Francisco. I remember it as a teenager as one of my favorites for only 1 thing; the vehicle chase scene. The story is slow and has a lot of just "running after the bad guys" and , looking back on it now with nostalgia, is confusing.

But considered a "Steve McQueen classic" type of film to be watched at least once. Good for its time then but does not really hold up in 2019.

While the plot is fairly standard, Bullitt is still stylish fun, ably acted by the stellar cast, scored to jazzy perfection, and well-directed by Peter Yates. I saw a comment complaining about it being "too slow," but I didn't think so. Then again, I prefer slower-paced movies, especially when there are a lot of great action scenes peppered throughout that don't depend on flashy editing or over the top video game fight choreography. The car chase is worth the price of admission alone, but I loved the whole thing enough to consider getting a copy for my home library.

I haven't seen the movie since about 1970 and had high expectations. But OMG, it is such a slow movie, the first hour is a snoozefest. I suggest just fast forwarding to the car chase scenes then calling it a wrap.

Give me a Bugatti Veyron, a Pagani Huayri, a Stile Bertone Mantide, or this film's chase seen with that Dodge Charger! And be sure to include that pizza!

Pehaps this movie will be stand the test of time, The Ford "Mustang Fastback" chasing the Dodge "Charger" in one of the best chase scene on film. San Francisco is a great backdrop for Steve McQueen and Jacqueline Bisset to solve a murder, have a love affair and mesh some gears back in the late 1960's.

Steve McQueen, the king of cool does not disappoint. Love the San Francisco setting, and the car. No metrosexual, Steve oozes male pheromones from the screen. This is my second favorite Steve McQueen movie. The Getaway is my all time favorite. From reform school tough teenager, to great movie star. Steve always burns up the screen.
