Traces Johnny Cash's childhood, including his distant father to his early attempts at a music career. At this point in his life he marries his girlfriend Vivian. During a tour with singer/musicians Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis, he encounters singer June Carter, and his love for her, and her rejection of him through the years, spurs him into drugs, drinking, and depression. June is both a sassy spitfire singer whose charm breaks hearts and eventually becomes a sympathetic friend who tries to help Johnny get over her. A true love story of two country music stars.

One of my favorite movies. The music is great, and the story of Johnny Cash is heartbreaking.

Great actor and actress. I learned more about Johnny Cash's life. Though I am not a fan, it is enjoyable watching great songs and his life.

July 6, 2014.....Ok, so I said I wouldn't watch another movie with Joaqin Pheonix, (after watching "The Master" and "Her,") but after reading the comments about this movie, and being a Johnny fan, (but not a fanatic!) I have to give this a go. It's waiting for me at the library, so I'll let you know how I feel about Joaqin after this!.......July 12, well I have to say, I was happy with Joaqin's performance in this movie, and the movie was just great overall. I didn't know much about Johnny Cash's life, just his music, and I remember watching his show when I was young. I'm going to look up a few books on him now, as I'm pretty sure the movie skipped a lot of stuff! I loved the proposal scene. That's pretty romantic stuff! I see I didn't know too much about June as well. I always pictured her as more of a ......? (Don't know what to say I thought she was, but not the strong minded kind of gal that she is portrayed as in the film. Must read up on her also!)

good music, basic story that is well known. could provoke conversations with younger children.

I heard it was good, and it is, but not that good.
FWIW, I am no fan of country music.

Just watched it for the second time in the last year. Terrific movie and you see the characters and music of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly and, of course Johnny and June. An excellent musical history lesson.

June Carter: [on stage w/John] We've got these people all revved up, John. Now c'mon, let's sing Jackson for 'em.

Johnny Cash: You've got me all revved up. Now I've asked you forty different ways and it's time you come up with a fresh answer.

June Carter: Please sing.

Johnny Cash: I'm asking you to marry me. I love you, June. Now I know I said and done a lotta things, that I hurt you, but I promise, I'll never do that again. I only want to take care of you. I will not leave you like that dutch boy with your finger in the dam.

June Carter: [shakes head]

Johnny Cash: You're my best friend. Marry me.

June Carter: [quietly] All right.

Johnny Cash: Yeah?

[They kiss and the crowd cheers]
