Follows the life of Howard Hughes as the twentysomething millionaire, having already made a fortune improving the design of oil-drilling bits, who comes to Hollywood with an interest in getting into the picture business. It doesn't take long for Hughes to jump from producer to director of his first major film project, a World War I air epic. The film was a massive hit, and the eccentric inventor became a mogul in Hollywood, making Jean Harlow a star and enjoying a romance with Katharine Hepburn. But Hollywood's old-boy network never fully accepted Hughes, and in time his passion for flying began to reclaim his attentions. In time he began designing new planes, setting air speed records, flying around the world, and risking his life testing aircraft. Hughes also found time to romance Ava Gardner and founded his own airline, Trans-World Airlines. As his ideas became bolder and more eccentric, he gained many powerful enemies.

For an epic movie directed by Martin Scorsese it still leaves something to be desired because it leaves out and cuts short certain things about Howard Hughes's life personally and politically that should have been brazenly portrayed in this film.Maybe if Martin Scorsese would have wrote this film also that would have happened but the Weinstein brothers are 2 of the executive producers of this.More than likely they're the reason why this film ends on an incomplete note unfortunately and that's too bad and so sad,BUT I DIGRESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Must See - Aviator (2004) 170 min. directed by Martin Scorcese and stars Leonardo DiCarprio and Cate Blanchett. This the biopic of Howard Hughes and his relationship with Katherine Hepburn (played beautifully by Cate Blanchett). The film grips the viewer from the beginning and doesn't let up - there is so much in the life of the eccentric Hughes to never allow for a dull moment.

Blanchett earned an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2005 and the film won for Art Direction, Cinematography, Costume, Editing. The film was nominated for Best Picture, Director, Actor (DiCaprio), Supporting Actor (Alan Alda), Original Screenplay and Sound. .

A slow start and a little too long for me. Story of Howard Hughs became more interesting when his obsessive compulsive urges became stronger and how he tried to control it.
I learned a lot about Howard Hughes from this film. He was a fascinating person.

Leonardo DiCaprio turns in his usual interesting, energetic performance.
