Lily and Rose are the Wilder sisters. They grew up on a ranch in northern New Mexico. Lily went off to college and a good-paying job in California. Rose stayed, married young, had two children. This story takes place some twenty or so years later. Each is questioning choices she has made throughout her life. Their relationship is complicated, as most sibling relationships are, shaped by how their parents treated each of them, by how they reacted to the situations of their lives. As is also often the case, each is a bit jealous of the other, of what one thinks the other has that the one does not. I loved reading their story and I loved the descriptions of the settings as I spent much of my childhood in New Mexico and could easily see, breathe, smell what was being described. Mapson's dialogue is believable, her story full of heart. I recommend this novel.
