Barcelonais Robert Hughes's monumentally informed and irresistibly opinionated guide to the most un-Spanish city in Spain. Hughes scrolls through Barcelona's often violent history; tells the stories of its kings, poets, magnates, and revolutionaries; and ushers readers through municipal landmarks that range from Antoni Gaudi's sublimely surreal cathedral to a postmodern restaurant with a glass-walled urinal. The result is a work filled with the attributes of Barcelona itself: proportion, humor, andseny-- the Catalan word for triumphant common sense. From the Trade Paperback edition.

You won't find another history of Barcelona that is as accessible and comprehensive as this one. If you want a lighter, quicker survey of Barcelona and its history, then Hughes has another book that might fit the bill;check out "Barcelona: The Great Enchantress" for what amounts to an abridged version of this one. If particular topics intrigue you, then you can read about them in more depth in this more comprehensive "Barcelona".
