Tom Ripley passes his leisured days at his French country estate tending the dahlias, practicing the harpsichord, and enjoying the company of his lovely wife, Heloise. Never mind the bloodstains on the basement floor.
But some new neighbors have moved to Villeperce: the Pritchards, just arrived from America. they are a ghastly pair, with vulgar manners and even more vulgar taste. Most inconvenient, though, is their curiosity. Ripley does, after all, have a few things to hide. When menacing coincidences begin to occur, a spiraling contest of sinister hints and mutual terrorism ensues, resulting in one of Patricia Highsmith's most elegantly harrowing novels to date. The fifth and final volume in Patricia Highsmith's Riley series (the "Ripliad") and the penultimate book before her death in 1995. In Ripley, Highsmith created what has become an archetype: the sophisticated (he likes art, good food, and classical music) and blandly charming sociopath. Highsmith lived in Europe much of her life and I don't think it's a coincidence that Riley is an American who primarily interacts (and sometimes kills) Europeans. I'll leave the psychologists to figure it out. Some films based on her books to check out: "Strangers on a Train," "Purple Noon," "The American Friend," The Talented Mr. Ripley."

The Prichards move into Tom Ripley's quiet neighborhood in the French countryside. The couple seem to know all about the people Tom has murdered in the past and torment him with crank calls, packages, menacing letters, snapshots of his house, and even follow him and his wife to Tangier where they vacation. Tom brilliantly turns the tables on them when they begin fishing for a corpse in a river where they suspect Tom has hidden a body.
