Corbin (history, Sorbonne) analyzes 19th century prostitution in France as a business undergoing industrialization, urbanization, and regulation, just as other businesses were. He sees the licensed brothels as the sex-service analogs to factories in manufacturing, and examines the workforce, recruitment and career patterns, the clientele, and specialized establishments. Reviews the turn-of-the- century demise of the licensing system, and compares current prostitution. Originally published in French in 1978.
