Professor Rath (Jannings), a middle aged schoolmaster, becomes infatuated with and later marries Lola-Lola (Dietrich), a singer in a sleazy café. Rath's devotion is used by Lola to degrade and humiliate him. When Lola finally leaves him for another man, Rath returns to his school a broken old man and dies at his desk. This film made Dietrich an overnight star.

Took it out because I remembered the old show being on TV. In the end I didnt like it much.

important for its place in film history, its star and director, my first Marlene Dietrich film.

A touching movie from the innocent times between WWI and WWII. In many ways it reminds me of Cabaret, also worth watching. The underlying message or tone of desperation might seem off putting to some but the story conveys a realism that, of itself, is probably somewhat depressing. My personal thought is that Blue Angel is Marlene Dietrich's best performance ever. A worthy watch.

I could not get the English version disc to play so I watched the German version. it was weak on the subtitles so I had to guess at what they were saying mostly. I still enjoyed the story and understood it. I can see why she caused such a stir when it came out. by today's standards it is quite tame but I'm sure it was a shock in 1930.
