Compilers have divided the era 1887-1987 into four time periods, based on society's attitudes about women in sports and on the changing organizational control of women's athletic competition in the United States: the Pre-Organizational Era (1887-1916); the Organizational Era (1917-1956); the Competitive Period (sometimes known as the "Milk and Cookies Era" (1957-1971); and the Title IX Era (1972-1987). In each time period, a year-by-year chronology lists significant accomplishments in women's sports. Includes a few photos. Annotation(c) 2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
