DNF pg 50
...Well, that was disappointing. This was a book I had been so eager to read, and I had almost picked it up too many times to count. I was so excited to finally read it, but alas.
The very first page (not counting the prologue) is the main character thinking about how hot a stranger (aka as the future love interest) is. A few pages later, we are introduced to a guy who is basically her boyfriend.
This is not at all what I had been hoping for. I wanted dark and gritty London, thiefs and con artists, a These Violent Delights enemies to lover situation, and general Charles Dickens vibes all around. Instead I got a book that felt like the author wanted to write a cheesy romance set in 1800s London and decided to make it appealing by saying it was inspired by Olivier Twist. The prologue alone feels like the most random decision made by a 19th century man. The characters flirt outrageously with each other, which was actually the most enjoyable part. Except that was like 40 pages in and if that's not Insta love I don't know what is. Both of the characters feel the exact same even though one is supposed to have good morals and the other bad. The girl is bodyshamed multiple times. She is set up to look strong and independent, but with the way the rest of the book is written her feminist attitude is degraded by everything else. The sneaking around action scenes felt like the Princess in Black. Olivia walking her dog around everywhere felt unrealistic for the time period, but I could be wrong about that. The font is random and unusual, the type of font I change Arial to to try and make school assignments more fun. The epilogue, which I skipped forward to read, was cheesey, and the love interest refers to the main character possessivly at least three times.
It was not Charles Dickens vibes. (although I've never read Oliver Twist, only A Tale of Two Cities)DNF pg 50

This was a book I randomly picked up in the new section of my library and I am glad I did!
This book is about Rosy, a bone familiar who reluctantly goes to a witch school and, much to her dismay, is courted by a princess.
Daughter of the Bone Forest was a fun breath of fresh air. Most of it follows Rosy's day to day life at Witch Hall, but I never found that it got boring. The magic system is very unique. Witches' familiars are people, and there are four types of magic: glass, ice, flower, and bone. The familiars can shift into different types of animals! The world was also very unique and I loved the idea of the bone forest. I was definitely confused about the magic system at first, but I felt I slowly gained knowledge throughout the book without any info dumping. Another great thing about this book was that it was super diverse and inclusive.
Lastly, I picked this book up because I wanted to read something with spring vibes and the cover felt very much like spring. And while this book takes place over the summer and fall, I did think it was a good spring read (maybe I just imagined the spring vibes lol). The book feels like flowers and sunshine even though it is about a country on the brink of war.
I will read the next book, although I am slightly hesitant because it is about Shaw. I liked Rosy much more than Shaw, and that means the book will have more politics and battles, which I thought this book was lovely without. I am excited to see what happens to all the characters!
I recommend this book to anyone who wants a light, feel good, diverse fantasy. This was a book I randomly picked up in the new section of my library and I am glad I did!

A collection of my thoughts on this book:
-the audio book won an award, and I listened to some of it and it was actually quite good. The narrator did all of the accents and changed the tone of her voice to match the dialogue.
-I love fast paced historical fiction. This was no different, and my heart pounded during some of the flying scenes.
-This book felt like a delightful tour of Europe.
-I loved the main character, Stella. She was so determined and had such a great personality. I also loved the dynamic of the main trio.
-This book also had a huge supporting cast and I love them all. It was so fun seeing them work together to outsmart the villains!
-The book is set between WWI and WWII, which I haven't read about before. It was so interesting to read the characters from different countries and know that in reality so few of them will have a happy ending.
-Speaking of reality, I thought these characters were real. I've heard people talk about this before but its never happened to me. The characters would pose for a picture and I would turn the page, expecting to find the actual photograph. I wanted to Google what happened to these pilots during the war!
-Since it wasn't set during an actual world war, this was a less heavy and serious historical fiction.
-At first I was disappointed that the entire book wasn't a mystery with clues, but I actually enjoyed the book more when they were hiding and working together to save one of their friends from the murderer.
-I have mentioned it before and I will mention it again: I loved the teamwork!!! Stella, Tony, Pim, Erlend, and Sebastian were all wonderful characters.
-Lastly, this quote satisfied an itch for a glorious analogy I didn't know I had:
(Minor spoilers)
"Suddenly I saw myself clearly as one of an army of playing pieces. Sebastian and I were the knight and queen to Tony's king, and our fellow racers were the staunch and supportive soldiers protecting him: Bazille the second knight, Pim and Erlend as castles, the other racers a squadron of defensive bishops and pawns. And we were all dashing in desperate leaps and swoops around Tony on a board full of enemies, while he could move in faster than one careful step at a time."A collection of my thoughts on this book:

This was my most anticipated book of the year. I read the Defend the Dawn in May, and it ended with such a bang that I thought about these characters every single day for 8 months. After dreaming about it for so long, reading it felt surreal. I have so many thoughts that I'm struggling to put them into words, but here is an attempt at a review.
Spoilers for the series ahead!!!
I love this book as much as I love the rest of the series. But, and I can't believe I'm saying this, I think it needed to be shorter. There was too much of Harristan's POV. I understand we needed to know what was happening in Kandala, but I hadn't been able to connect to him in the previous books, so I only cared about what happened to Tessa and Corrick. Additionally, the first two books are told in perspectives that frequently alternate, but Destroy the Day had five long chapters of one perspective before it switched to the next. I have nothing against this style, but it bothered me (A lot) how different it was from the past two books. This wouldn't have been as big as a problem if the characters were all having the same events, but as it was Tessa, Corrick, and Harristan were separated for most of the book with their respective side characters (more on that later!). I enjoyed the separation, as it allowed for the main characters to grow individually and make strong connections with other side characters (!!!), but they reunited way too late in the book. Also, there was a lot of politics. Technically I should've taken more than a half star off the rating for all of this, but I love Tessa and Corrick (and Erik and Lochlan) too much for that!
Which leads us to the characters of the book!!!
I am an extremely character driven reader. If I love a character, I will have a visceral reaction to every movement they make! Having said that, I had an unhealthy amount of reactions to this book. I already loved the characters themselves, but the dynamics between the characters in this book were magnificent! Lochlan and Corrick are so good together I can barely stand it. The way they go from enemies to bros is absolute perfection. Erik and Tessa were the relationship I was looking forward to the most in this book. They were no where near as good as Lochlan and Corricm, but they were still amazing. Erik as a big brother is *chef's kiss*. I just needed a couple more scenes of them. Then there was the introduction of Olive and Ellmo, which first I was hesitant about because I was worried about how the should affect Erik as a character. After getting over the name Ellmo, I found there was no reason to worry at all! Olive and Ellmo added exactly what the book was missing: female friendship and comic relief (although the book was already funny). Harristan and Quint were nice as well, though I didn't like them nearly as much as the others. And I became waaay more attached to Thorin and Saeth than I ever would've dreamed of. As for Rian, I didn't like him but I thought his character was done very well. You really can tell he just wants the best for his people but was never taught to rule. He doesn't know enough to look beyond the short term effects. I just wish there had been more of Karri.
Random side note: the little "wanted for treason" list at the beginning meant everything to me for some reason.
As for the ending, it was a little rushed. I needed more time for the entire cast of characters to be together. And the conflict was resolved a little too easily, although it was kind of always a huge misunderstanding. I hate to admit it, but a small part of me was disappointed with the final chapter even though I saw it coming.
Overall, I love this book and I love this series and I strongly recommend it to anyone who reads fantasy. I loved these characters and this world so much and their struggles seen so real!! My only problem with it was Harristan, which was unfortunately a large chunk of the book. This was my most anticipated book of the year. I was pleasantly surprised by this book! The first two books in this trilogy, while entertaining, hadn't been very good. But with Ruin and Rising I can tell that Leigh Bardugo has improved as an author when it comes to her writing and characters.
As an extremely character-driven reader, I adored the character cast in this book. Many of the characters we have met in other books are suddenly thrown together with Alina and Mal on a quest, leading to a total of 12 people (and one cat). And this never seemed like too many! Every character had a chance to shine and to bond! And the scant amount of girl characters in the previous two books was practically made up for with the bonding moments the girls had. And while I love all the characters, Zoya, Misha, Tolya, and Tamar remain my favorites.
Then there was the dialogue and banter among this group. Ohh the banter. There were many moments when I laughed out loud. Leigh Bardugo's dialogue had always been good, but with this many characters it had a chance to flourish that it hadn't before.
Which leads us to the writing. The writing in this book was GORGEOUS.
"In the end, maybe love just meant longing for something impossibly bright and out of reach."
There were many times I read a passage aloud, which is what I do if I think the writing is good. Many times I felt like a knife was being twisted into my heart. Particularly with the things Alina and Mal said to each and Baghra's backstory aaah.
If you didn't like the first two books, I would recommend taking a break and then coming back to Ruin and Rising. Forgetting this worst parts of the other two helped me to love this one more. Additionally, the Shadow and Bone trilogy is a good read if you're mind is stuck in another fantasy world (ahem, Defy the Night). These books are fast-paced, and (hopefully) you will come to like the characters.
These characters now live rent-free in my head and I can't wait to read Six of Crows and hopefully see a little more of them!I was pleasantly surprised by this book!
